Erik A. Whitfield, M.D. has lived and worked in the New Orleans community since 1995. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Bioengineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Whitfield attended the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine. In 2000, he completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at Tulane University. He was board certified in Internal Medicine in 2000 and in Psychiatry in 2004.
Dr. Whitfield continued his education as a candidate in Adult Psychoanalytic Training at the New Orleans-Birmingham Psychoanalytic Institute in New Orleans, where he has served as an instructor for candidates and fellows within the school.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Whitfield has been the Faculty Supervisor for the Mental Health Primary Care Clinic for the Veterans Affairs Hospital in New Orleans and an instructor for Tulane University School of Medicine. He previously worked for Charity Hospital in New Orleans and was the Director of the Mental Health Primary Clinic at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in New Orleans. He was the Medical Director of Psychiatry for St. Charles Parish Hospital from 2000-2015. He began his private practice in New Orleans in 2008.
